What Does Matthew 7:21-24 Mean? Not Everyone Who Says 'Lord, Lord'.

One of the most sobering passages in the entire New Testament comes near the end of the Sermon on the Mount. In Matthew 7:21-24, Jesus says:

"Not everyone who says to me, 'Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven. Many will say to me on that day, 'Lord, Lord, did we not prophesy in your name and in your name drive out demons and in your name perform many miracles?' Then I will tell them plainly, 'I never knew you. Away from me, you evildoers!' Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock."

What Is Jesus Saying Here?

Jesus is making a striking and urgent point: profession of faith is not the same as genuine faith. Calling Jesus "Lord" — even performing acts in His name — does not automatically mean someone is walking in true obedience to God. The key phrase is "you evildoers", which in the original Greek is hoi ergazomenoi tēn anomian — literally, "those who practice lawlessness."

Lawlessness isn't just breaking rules. In the biblical sense, it means living without regard for God's law — going through the motions of religion while rejecting the actual authority of God over your life.

The Connection to 1 John 3:4

This passage echoes a definition the Apostle John gives us: "Everyone who sins is breaking God's law, for all sin is contrary to the law of God" (1 John 3:4, NLT) — or as other translations put it, "sin is lawlessness." Together, Matthew 7 and 1 John 3 paint a consistent picture: those who truly belong to Christ are not those who merely speak His name, but those who turn from lawlessness and walk in obedience.

Why This Verse Matters Today

We live in a culture where it's easy to claim a Christian identity without much cost. Matthew 7:21-24 is a loving warning from Jesus Himself — not to condemn, but to call us back to what real faith looks like. It's costly. It's obedient. It's built on the rock of His words, not on the shifting sand of empty religion.
