Torah: A Light to Our Path — Obedience as the Oil for the Lamp

"Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path." — Psalm 119:105

There is an ancient image woven throughout Scripture — a lamp burning in the darkness, casting just enough light for the next step. For those walking in covenant with the Creator, the Torah is that lamp. But a lamp without oil is nothing more than an unlit wick. Obedience is the oil that causes the Torah to shine.

The Torah as Light

The Hebrew word Torah is often translated as "law," but its root meaning is closer to "instruction" or "teaching." It is the revealed wisdom of the Creator given to guide His people through life. Just as physical light reveals what is hidden in darkness — obstacles, dangers, and the path forward — so the Torah illuminates truth in a world filled with confusion and deception.

The psalmist didn't simply admire the Torah from a distance. He walked by its light daily. Each commandment, each principle, each story embedded in Scripture serves as a guiding beam for those willing to follow where it leads.

Obedience: The Oil That Fuels the Lamp

In the ancient world, an oil lamp was a household necessity. Without oil, it offered no light — just a cold, dark vessel. In the same way, the Torah in our hands but not in our lives is powerless to illuminate our path.

Obedience is the active, daily choice to pour ourselves into alignment with what the Torah teaches. It is not about earning favor through perfect performance, but about a heart so in love with the Creator that it desires to walk the way He has laid out. Obedience keeps the flame burning.

Yeshua (Jesus) said it plainly: "If you love me, keep my commandments" (John 14:15). Love and obedience are inseparable. The oil of obedience flows from a heart of love.

Walking Step by Step

Notice the psalmist says the Torah is a lamp to his feet — not a floodlight illuminating the entire road ahead. A lamp gives enough light for the next step. This is a profound picture of walking in faith and obedience. We may not see the whole journey, but we are given what we need for right now.

Each day of faithful obedience adds more oil to the lamp. Each step taken in alignment with the Creator's instruction carries us further down the path of life, wisdom, and blessing.

Keep the Lamp Burning

There will be seasons when the darkness feels overwhelming — when the path ahead seems unclear and the weight of the journey is heavy. In those moments, return to the Torah. Open its pages. Let its wisdom speak. And then, pour in the oil of obedience — not out of obligation, but out of devotion.

The lamp will burn. The path will be lit. And step by step, you will find your way.
